Dhul Qa’dah, The Sacred Month

Introduction

Dhul Qadah, the eleventh month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, is one of the four holy months designated by Allah (SWT). It holds great importance in the Islamic year months, being a sacred time for reflection and devotion.

As one of the Muslim months, Dhul Qadah emphasizes peace and the avoidance of conflict, aligning with the sanctity of the months of the Islamic calendar. This Islamic month also serves as a spiritual preparation for the blessed month of Dhul Hijjah, highlighting its significance in the calendar of Islam.

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…”

Qur’an, 9:36

It is forbidden to start a fight during this month, as well as the three remaining holy months of Rajab, Muharram, and Dhul Hijjah.

“They ask you [Prophet] about fighting in the prohibited month. Say, ‘Fighting in that month is a great offence…” [Qur’an, 2:217]

Significant Events During Dhul Qa’dah

The Battle of the Trench occurred in Dhul Qa’dah in the year 5 AH. To defend themselves and the city of Madina, which was then known as Yathrib, from the 10,000 Makkans, 3,000 Muslims constructed a trench. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Muslims succeeded because of Salman Al-Farsi’s suggestion to dig a trench, which was done by Allah’s (SWT) will.
The Treaty of Hudaibiya was signed during Dhul Qa’dah in 6 AH the next year. It was signed by the Prophet (PBUH) and written by Ali (R), ensuring a decade of peace during which Muslims might travel to Makkah to perform their pilgrimages.
This month is even more significant because the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions did the first Umrah at Dhul Qa’dah.

“In all (twelve) months, Allah then chose four out of these months and made them sacred, emphasizing their sanctity, making sinning in them greater, in addition to multiplying the rewards of righteous deeds during them.”

Charity Giving in the Month of Dhul Qa’dah

Giving to charity on a regular basis is advised and is praised and morally righteous throughout the year, not just during the holy months. Consequently, it ought to be administered all year long. “May peace be upon him,” the Prophet said.

“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said:

“The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
